Kavalan is the distillery that put Taiwan on the world whisky map. Founded in 2005 in Yilan County, it released its first whisky in 2008. Within a few years it was beating established Scotch and Japanese names in blind tastings. Its Solist Vinho Barrique was named World's Best Single Malt at the 2015 World Whiskies Awards. In 2026 the Peatist Oloroso Sherry Cask took Whisky of the Year at the International Whisky Competition.
The secret is Taiwan's subtropical climate. Heat and humidity speed up the exchange between spirit and oak, giving Kavalan its signature style: rich, fruit-forward single malt full of mango, pineapple, vanilla and honey. The distillery also uses pure spring water from the Snow Mountain range and is known for its careful work with casks.
